Sisterhood

When I was a little girl, I remember asking my parents to have another child so that I would have a sister. They would always answer something like: "Well, when your little brother is older, we would ask the stock for another baby." Other times, they would just smile at me. I kept hoping that any day the good news would come and I would have a brand new sister. I was the only girl, with an older and a younger brother and we had three years difference.

I remember playing with my dolls and wanting my brothers to join me in the pretend games. I was not always susccessful at having them stay a long time. They would always end up with their cars, plastic guns (I guess in those years, parents weren't as concious about toy guns ) or their firemen hats. Sometimes, while alone in my room, I would dream about having a sister and "both of us" would have this great conversation while combing our dolls's hairs and so on. Other times, I would go kind of in a trance, singing out loud in front of the mirrow, tilting my head and letting my long hair move with the music, while holding a comb as a microphone; That was another dream of mine; being a singer and I would create my own songs. I always thought that play time would have been a lot more fun with the sister that never came.

My parents lived in a small town and decided I would go to a boarding school four hours away. First time I left, I was excited but sad, to leave the comfort and familiarity of my house and embark in a new world with new friends and a new school run by nuns. I remember being very curious about their habits. The congretation of the Franciscan Sisters wore a heavily starched white "toca" very closed to their eyebrows and chin. (even though I complaint every time vacation ended and it was time to return to school, I understood later on in life why my parent sent me there). I would be starting 5th grade and being one of the new kids in class was not fun at all, specially being shy as I was, short of turning 10 years old. I remember meeting Annie Cavallo, who is still a good friend. Even though we don't write or see each other often, when we do, it feels as if we had never parted. I thought she was so lucky to have a sister. How neat to have that friend at home, to go to school with or confide things to. How cool was that! With time I resigned myself to that fact.

But I think, God was saving the best for last, as he has blessed me with three wonderful daughters. I must have told them this story many times! I also have told them, to cherish each other and that when I am not around anymore( to which they always give me a funny look) they would continue being good sisters, never let anyone interfere with that bond and always try to find time to be together. This weekend is one of those sisters randebous. The two younger ones happen to be visiting the older sister who recently moved to this area. They have become aunties and are excited to spend time with their little nephew too. The daughters just called to congratulate me for Grandparents' Day which is celebrated this sunday. I feel so happy to know they are having fun together as in the good old days.
